Check out this cool café in thriving Tha Tien

The Tha Tien market and pier are well know to people who have visited the Grand Palace in Bangkok. But the origins of the Tha Tien area are a bit of a mystery.

Some say that, during the reign of King Mongut (1804-1868), there was a great fire that razed the area, and it was then named Tha Tien because that can mean a bare area of land.

Others believe that the area’s original name was “Ha Tien” and that it was named by the local Vietnamese community after a port in the south of their own country.

A third version derives from an old poem, “Mhom Pimsen’s Nirat”, which says that the area was originally called  “Bang Jean”, a reference to the Chinese people who used to live there.

Whatever the true history, this place is still beautiful, unique and charming. It is a famous tourist drawcard for people from around the world, and there are many restaurants and coffee shops to serve both them and the thriving local community.

Among them is one of our favourites, the Goodjob Café, which is owned by acclaimed architect and designer Mr Sujin Osatharayakul.

The café is not big, but it is comfortable, beautiful and cool. Design features include a pink neon sign exclaiming the name “Goodjob”, and a green door with matching tiles designed in a  Sino-Portuguese style. Its two storeys are decorated differently, but on both levels the style is simple, friendly to the eyes and fully functional.

The decor is a perfect mix of classical Thai and modern design ideas adapted by its talented owner. As regular customers, our favourite spot is a corner table on the second floor, where we can look out the window to see the Grand Palace and watch the local people going about their daily tasks.

While the menu is not extensive, most of the selections are home-made and they are all very tasty. Our favourites include the Tom Yum Pizza (240 baht or 350 baht for a larger size). It’s a thin, crispy pizza, with a tom-yum and mushroom taste, that blends European and Thai styles.

The Kang Kheaw Whan Pizza (240 or 350 baht) tastes like a green curry on bread, which is a surprisingly a good match. We also love the Spaghetti Phad Khee Moa (drunken noodles), the Thai desserts, and the drinks menu, which includes varieties of tea and coffee.

The owner is almost always on hand at the cafe, and he is keen to provide friendly, personal service to all his customers. Once you’ve visited the Goodjob Café, it’s likely that you, too, will become a regular patron.
