The benefits of eating vegetarian and vegan food are well known. They relate to good intestinal health, clear skin and other physical benefits. But many people have been reluctant to try these foods because it’s believed that they are bland and offer very little variety.
A visit to the Veganerie Mercury Ville branch will change that perception. Khun Ja has been operating this restaurant with the support of her family for more than five years, and they are all committed to cooking and serving the highest quality vegan food.
The chef’s focus is on quality ingredients without adding any milk, butter, eggs or meat. The menu items are rich in nutrition, with fewer calories than meat dishes, and less cholesterol. Khun Ja has been a vegan for eight years, following a path already taken by her mother, who was inspired by a television program about tackling illness with a vegetarian diet.
Khun Ja noticed that her mother’s skin and overall health had improved with the new diet. After trying these foods herself, she noticed that her weight had reduced and her pimples cleared up. She says she is now a committed vegan for life, and she is control of all aspects of developing, creating and adjusting the recipes, as well as cooking.
The restaurant started out as a bakery, with other menu items slowly added. These unique and delicious dishes are suitable for all ages.
The restaurant, on the fourth floor of the The Mercury Ville in Chidlom, is quite small, with just eight tables. However, it is beautifully decorated in black with cement and natural wood features.
It serves a 100 per cent vegan menu, which means the food is low in fat, sugar and cholesterol, and that no meat, milk, eggs, butter or cheese is used. Gluten-free breads, cakes, brownies and waffles are imported from Australia and are made from bean and cereal starches. Ice-cream and yogurt is made from soy milk.
We tasted the Fruity Glory Pancakes (220 baht), which are vanilla in flavour and covered with fruit including banana, strawberries and blueberries. The sauce contains almond, granola, chia seeds, coconut syrup and vegan butter, and has pleasant salty, sour and sweet tastes.
Banana Nut Butterscotch Hotcake (240 baht) smelt wonderful and was perfectly combined with vegan ice cream and banana.
We also enjoyed the Pizza Combo Set (270 baht), Avocado Toast (185 baht), and Sweet Potato, Chickpea, Spinach, Coconut Curry Baked Roti (240 baht).
The healthy soy-milk beverage options included Iced Cocoa (140 baht) and Matcha Latte (140 baht). We finished with a refreshing Iced Lime Juice (85 baht).
You don’t have to be a vegan to visit the Veganerie Mercury Ville. But if you do, you can be guaranteed delicious food that’s healthy for you – as well as some good karma.
