Bangkok hotel buffets are not for the fainthearted. And the buffets at Voila! restaurant on the second floor of the five-star Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit have earned a deserved reputation as being among the best in the city.
This is a place for serious eaters who never count calories. The diner is confronted with a mouthwatering array of options: seafood and meat cooked to order, salads, soups, noodles, sushi and sashimi, pasta, pizza, cold cuts, Thai classics, risotto, handmade ice cream and delicious desserts. Voila! even has its own cheese room.
Voila! is a spacious, nicely designed restaurant with a modern style, while service is of the standard you would expect in a luxury hotel.
The seafood counter was groaning with lobster, river prawns, blue crab, mussels, squid, salmon and Irish oysters. The chefs were soon cooking me up lobster, prawns, crab and salmon, served with a Greek salad and a butter sauce. They were a seafood lover’s heaven
Then I enjoyed intensely flavoured lobster bisque and baked sea bass before tucking into freshly cooked sirloin steak and hot dishes of lamb sausage, chicken in gravy, beef red curry, spicy beef with basil and a kale dish.
Not wanting to appear greedy, I had only four desserts: pecan pie, chocolate cake, crème brulee and coffee ice cream. I could have had tiramisu made on the spot but felt I had to draw the line somewhere.
Although I was feeling the strain, I had to visit the elegant cheese room and try four French classics — Roquefort, Camembert, Boursin and Chaource — to round off a perfect meal.
My only regret was that I too full to visit some of the cooking stations, including the pasta counter manned by a top-class Italian-trained chef.
“Voila! is an all-day dining restaurant with an a la carte menu, however our main focus are our buffets which have become very popular, particularly our Sunday brunch,” says assistant food and beverage manager Daryl Lim.
“Our customers are a 30-70 mix of hotel guests and Thais & expatriates, who love our seafood. We try to have plenty of variety in our buffets and are always looking to improve.”
