Lotus Hotel Ground floor Sukhumvit Soi 33 Bangkok, 10110
To enter AVRA is to leave the hustle and bustle from Bangkok’s chaotic Sukhumvit Road and immediately feel transported to a Greek bistro in the Mediterranean. Dried herbs and clay pots hang from the ceiling above the tables adorned with blue and white checkered tablecloths that match the restaurant’s color theme representing Greece’s national flag colors.
With an open area bar sporting an assortment of various ouzo bottles, Greek wines, and even Greek beer, one wouldn’t be surprised to hear someone enthusiastically cry out, “Opa!”. Scene and boozy selection aside, it’s the incredible food here that simply demands a visit.
AVRA is Bangkok’s very first restaurant to specialize in both Greek and Georgian cuisines. They import their Greek spices, herbs, olives, yogurt, and feta cheeses direct from the port city of Thessaloniki, Greece as well as Georgian spices, herbs, and produce from the markets of Tbilisi, Georgia. This ensures a truly authentic flavor in all of their traditional dishes and it’s the authenticity that Anna, AVRA’s owner, strives to share with guests.
If you’re in the mood for Greek cuisine, start your meal off with some of their appetizer dips with complimentary pita bread. There are 4 different kinds of dips to choose from: Tzatziki (a thick yogurt with cucumber, garlic, and olive oil), Melitzanosalata (pureed grilled eggplant with red pepper, feta cheese, garlic, olive oil, and herbs), and Tyrosalata (a spread of spiced feta cheese with roasted red pepper), and of course Hummus. The best deal is to order a variety of Dips (350 baht) in which you can choose from any of the 3.
For a truly unique and delicious starter, the Xtapodi Salata (410 baht) is highly recommended. This warm salad consists of potatoes, cherry tomatoes, and large chunks of grilled tender octopus, with a tangy carrot and lemon dressing that makes the flavors pop!
AVRA’s menu contains many traditional Greek dishes you won’t find in Bangkok. If you want to experience some of these rare bites, their Abhazura (350 baht) is a must order. The dish consists of large spicy pork meatballs in rich tomato sauce, with fresh Greek yogurt, baked zucchini slices, and chopped dill on top of fresh pita bread.
Their menu contains many delicious souvlakis and grilled meat combinations, but if you’re dining solo don’t miss out on their incredible gyros. The Gyros Lamb (260 baht) offers a fresh-baked puffy pita completely stuffed with fries, lamb meat, thinly sliced onions, parsley, tomatoes, and a tangy tzatziki sauce. It’s also perfectly complimented with a Greek pilsner Nissos (230 baht)!
AVRA also offers a large selection of authentic Georgian dishes on their menu. You can integrate them in your Greek dining experience or make an entire meal of them. A must try appetizer to begin with are their khinkali dumplings. With their Tasty Trio (240 baht) dish, guests can choose a sampling of 3 different dumplings from the 5 different fillings they offer: potato, cheese, beef, salmon, and lamb.
To get a sense of just how intensely flavorful Georgian food can be, try the Ojahuri (330 baht). It’s a simple dish of pork, potatoes, and tomatoes, but the pork is marinated for 3 days with Georgian spices that will wake up your taste buds!
Georgia is famous for its baked treats. AVRA offers several meat or cheese filled delights on their menu. The Kubdari (390 baht) pastry is an excellent introduction. The breading is light and flaky, the Georgian spiced minced lamb filling is incredibly delicious, and the fresh pomegranate kernels deliver bursts of sweetness with each bite.
AVRA is a must-visit to experience amazing food and a reprieve from Bangkok’s hustle. For a deeper dive into their menu, check out this Chow Traveller article. Along with their extensive menu of Greek and Georgian dishes, AVRA also offers a large selection of Greek and Georgian wines, ouzos (a Greek anise liquor), and beers to enjoy during the dining experience. If you plan your visit right, after a festive meal you and your friends will be cheerfully exclaiming “Opa!”.
